For this weeks game review, I reviewed a game called Ascent. This is a 3rd person shooter game where the player has to defeat enemies and progress towards finishing the story.
When I first loaded this game up, I had the option to customise my character. This feature was very cool because it meant that I could change my characters name, gender, hair, face, markings, cloths, voice and much more. This meant that every player can have a customised character and people don’t have to all look the exact same with the same character.
After I had customised my character, I could choose to do a tutorial or skip it. This option appeared in the centre of my screen so it was very clear and obvious. This also meant that I couldn’t accidently click to not do it. I chose to complete the tutorial. When I loaded it up, I was taken through a small section of the map. As I got to certain progress points, the game would show/teach me a new control or ability. I could stay in each section (or move between sections) freely so I wasn’t rushed to do anything. The tutorial was very helpful and showed me exactly how to play the game. It was really easy to understand and I could wait around to practice as and when I needed to. This makes the player feel like they know what they are doing because they can walk themselves through without having to be dragged around.
The storyline is very good and has many multiple-choice options. This means that I could choose my story and it would change depending on how I reacted and what missions I did. At base, if you shot your weapon, the whole of your team would suddenly flip out on you and attack back. This was really cool because it makes the game feel slightly realistic as you shouldn’t shoot anyone without them caring at all. In addition, they would tell everyone nearby so everyone would be involved in the tense fighting.
Overall, the graphics were very good and made the game look very nice. The characters looked like they were real life people and the weapons looked real. The buildings had a balanced contrast of modern graphics but on a old building.
Overall, I would rate this game 5/5 stars.
